The Hard Facts Facing The American Workforce

* There is a $1.3 trillion total impact on the economy from seven chronic diseases—cancer, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, pulmonary conditions and mental illness. Of this amount, $1.1 trillion is attributed to lost productivity (DeVol et. al. 2007).

* It is projected that by 2023 there will be a 42% increase in cases of the seven chronic diseases, which will cost $4.2 trillion in treatment and lost economic output (DeVol et. al. 2007).

* Lowering the rates of obesity could produce productivity gains of $254 billion and avoid $60 billion in treatment expenditures annually (DeVol et. al. 2007).

* In 2004, the U.S. spent 85% of every healthcare dollar on people with chronic conditions (www.silverbook.org/fact/1334).

* In 2002, the U.S. spent 53% more per capita ($5,267) than the next highest country, Switzerland ($3,446), and 140% above the median industrialized country ($2,193) on health care, with comparable outcomes (Anderson et al. 2005).

* Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 out of 10 deaths in the U.S. (PFCD 2007).

* The economic toll of chronic disease for developing and developed nations around the world is estimated at approximately 3% of gross domestic product, globally (PricewaterhouseCoopers 2007).

* The world now has more people who are overweight than people who are hungry (PricewaterhouseCoopers 2007).

* According to the World Health Organization, the U.S. is the world’s fattest nation, with over half of adults overweight or obese. But China and India are growing fatter at a faster pace. By 2015, the number of overweight and obese adults in China and India will grow by 66% and 44%, respectively (PricewaterhouseCoopers 2007).

* More than half of multinational corporations in a 2006 survey expect to introduce or expand corporate wellness programs over the next 5 years (PricewaterhouseCoopers 2007).

* One-third of multinational corporations are rolling out comprehensive wellness programs in multiple countries, while another 17% are rolling out a single wellness program in multiple countries (PricewaterhouseCoopers 2007).

* Presenteeism (days employees are at work but performing at less than full capacity because they are ill due to chronic disease) is increasingly viewed as an important contributor to employee health costs. The January 2008 Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine reports that workers with moderate to severe obesity annually cost $1,800 (about $500 higher than for other workers) in presenteeism, based on an hourly wage of $21 (Gates et al. 2008).
* More than 60% of American adults don’t get the recommended amounts of physical activity, and the majority of the U.S. population has a poor diet (CDC 2002).

* In 2006, the average annual premium costs for insurance-covered workers were $4,242 for an individual, including both the worker and the employer contribution, and $11,480 for a family of four (KFF 2006).

So why should your company, or any company for that matter, invest in a fitness program for its employees?

Reason #1- Obese Workers Cost Employers More through both Absenteeism and Presenteeism!

A recent study conducted by Duke University found the following results after investigating 8 years of data from 11,728 Duke employees:

- Overweight workers are more injury prone than fit co-workers. Furthermore, these injuries occur in their knees, neck, back, shoulders, arms, hips, and wrists, causing debilitating conditions that limit worker productivity (presenteeism) and dependability (absenteeism).

- Overweight workers have higher health care costs than their fit co-workers due to the various obesity related illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, overuse injuries, etc.

- Obese workers cost more in injury claims as they have twice the rate of worker’s compensation claims than their fit co-workers

- The most overweight workers had 13 times more lost workdays due to work related injury and their medical claims for those injuries were 7 times higher than that of their fit co-workers

The lack of a solution to the obesity epidemic in America which is flooding the workplace could also result in unwanted complaints of discrimination by obese workers. Take a look at what some of our corporate client superstars have accomplished with our program:

Reason #2- Behavior is the Determining Factor in the Overall Health and Life Expectancy of Your Employees

Yes, you read that right... Movement Deficit Disorder (MDD). Are you kidding me? Talk about beating around the bush. WE ARE AN INCREDIBLY LAZY, INACTIVE SOCIETY. This sedentary lifestyle simply cripples the American work force and right now it is crippling your company! Though MDD may not be as deadly as cancer in the short-term, it leads to a slow, steady decay of the human mind and body that leads to a host of diminishing health factors that eventually leads people to early graves (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, degenerative muscles and/or joints, etc.)

According to The Institute for Health and Productivity Management (IHPM, http://www.ihpm.org/), the focus on health care alone has failed and this is clearly supported in the chart above as health care delivery is the least important factor in longevity. Take a look at the video below for IHPM CEO Sean Sullivan’s take on this trend:

Reason#3- Employee Presenteeism is a Harsh Reality that Costs Employers Money

According to Sean Sullivan, the CEO of IHPM, companies have focused solely on absenteeism for far too long because it only affects the production worker. In other words, with our advancements in technology, knowledge workers are usually able to complete their duties even if they are not at the work place. This is something that cannot be said for the production worker whose duties stem solely around their physical presence on a production line.

Sullivan claims that though absenteeism is part of the puzzle, presenteeism is the real concern when it comes to a company’s bottom line, for it captures the loss of employee functionality (and the resulting diminished productivity) while at work due to health issues. In other words, your employees may actually be at work, but if their physical and mental health is diminishing then their quality and output of work is suffering. Furthermore, because the the knowledge worker depends solely on “brain power” vs. “physical ability,” the declining mental health so characteristic of presenteeism seriously hampers their productivity.

Sullivan believes that instead of focusing on fixing what’s broken, companies must seek to prevent the breaking in the first place. Furthermore, due to the rapid aging of the American work force with baby boomers aging into retirement with chronic health issues, we cannot afford our current health care system. He describes the baby boomers leaving the work place (75 million total) with the birth-dearth generation behind them (45 million total). This will result in a potential gap of several tens of millions of middle aged skill workers over the course of the next 10 years! Thus companies must focus on ways to keep their employees as healthy and productive as possible to stay above the red line. Sullivan encourages employers to embrace the human capital model to overcome this trend. People are appreciable assets, unlike machines, so we need to invest in them by implementing a corporate health and wellness program!

For business, the real value of health is in performance at work versus health care costs. Most attempts to capture the impact of employee health in the workplace has focused on Return on Investment (ROI) versus Burden of Illness (BOI), due to the fact that it is a much easier concept to calculate. However, increased BOI (presenteeism) has a much greater impact than rising medical costs, for it reduces functionality of the employee and costs the company money before an employee ever makes it to the doctors office.

Companies must help their employees avoid the pitfalls of the current “symptom management” approach of American health care by providing its own form of preventative population health management for its employees. This is why corporate wellness is the future NOW!

Take a look at the testimonial below to see how our corporate health and wellness program improves worker productivity:

"For many years I have been dealing with muscle tightness, on and off lower back pain and back spasms and a weaker lower body. Since joining The Fat Loss Factory I no longer experience any lower back pain, I have become more flexible than ever and my legs, back and hips are stronger than they have ever been. The nutrition plan has really given me more sustained energy and focus throughout the day, I no longer experience the afternoon ‘energy crash’ which keeps me more productive.”
